The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation, headquartered in Dallas, was established in 1982 because of a
promise made between two sisters. Before her death from breast cancer at age 36,
Susan Goodman Komen asked her sister Nancy to promise that she would do
everything possible to bring an end to the disease. By establishing the
Foundation, Nancy Goodman Brinker kept her promise. Today, the Foundation is an
international organization with a network of 75,000 volunteers working through
more than 100 Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure events.
The Denver Affiliate of the Susan
G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1994 to raise awareness of
breast cancer while raising funds to help eradicate the disease on a local
level. The Affiliate has raised over $15 million through the Komen Denver Race
for the Cure, the Pink Tie Affair, third party benefits, corporate gifts and
sponsorships and individual donations. As a grant-making organization, the
Affiliate distributes these funds right back into the community through grants
to not-for-profit organizations that focus on providing breast cancer education,
screening, treatment and treatment support to uninsured and underinsured
individuals.
The Denver Affiliate is proud to
be a very volunteer-oriented organization. Through the generous efforts of their
volunteers, sponsors, donors and other supporters, they keep their expense to
revenue ratio to 18%.
